Band Sponsorship - new fundraising initiative

The AVHS Band Boosters are excited to launch a new sponsorship program to enhance the music education of our children.  If you, your family, grandparents or business are interested in supporting our young musicians, check out the sponsorship information on our website. Performance Quizzes - Due 5/5 & 5/12

All three curricular bands have recording assignments due on 5/5 and 5/12. The assignments are worth 30% of the 3rd trimester grade. Band members are asked to record sections of the concert music that we have been working on in class. Specifics can be found in Schoology.

Senior Band Scholarships - applications due Friday, 4/25

Scholarship applications are available for band seniors on Schoology. The Matt Liegel Memorial Scholarship ($1000 award) is given annually to one senior instrumental music student at Apple Valley High School. See application for specific criteria.

The Band Booster Scholarship is a $500 scholarship awarded to several (up to 10) deserving graduating seniors who have excelled in their participation while a member of the AVHS Band.

All applications can be found and submitted on the both the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble Schoology pages. Scholarship applications are due (submitted through Schoology) on Friday, 4/25.

Curricular Band Placements

Students continuing in band next school year were sent an email on Friday, 4/11, containing their placement in either Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble for the 2025-26 school year. This information has also been forwarded to the guidance office, and they will place students in the appropriate ensemble when putting your class schedule together for next school year. If students have questions regarding their placement, please wait one week, and then schedule an appointment to talk about your audition with Ms. Mason and Mr. Scalise. Thank you again for your hard work. Next year is going to be a great for the AVHS band program!

Jazz Ensemble 2 in-school field trip - Monday, 4/14

The guest artist for the spring jazz concert will be running a clinic with all 3 of our jazz ensembles on Monday, 4/14. Jazz 9 & 1 will clinic during their regular rehearsal time after school but Jazz 2 will be dismissed from period 6 at 1:25pm to attend the clinic 1:30-2:30pm.

Itinerary & Inclusions

You can find a tentative itinerary and a list of inclusions in our shared trip folder. The cost of the trip includes airfare, hotel, passes to all 4 parks, breakfast at the hotel, a per diem for some dinners, transportation around Orlando and to Cocoa Beach, and our clinic with Disney staff. Students will still need to provide some additional money for food and souvenirs. 

Payment Schedule

The final price of the trip with be dependant on the exact number of travelers and cost of airfare. Our estimated total is $1795.00. Any funds raised through the band boosters will be applied before the final payment. We will send out an account statement of all individual account fundraisers by the end of the school year. There will also be some fundraising opportunities in the fall.

Extra-Credit Athletic Band - Boys Basketball State Quarterfinals - Tuesday, 3/18 @Target Center

Students can sign-up to travel with the band to Target Center to perform as the Athletic Band for the Boys Basketball quarterfinal 12pm game to receive 5 extra-credit points and credit towards a band letter. 

Sign-Ups - Space is limited

Sign-ups will be posted on Monday morning on our Schoology page giving each curricular band time during rehearsal to sign-up. Space will be limited, as we are only allowed 2 buses for this game. A roster will be published on Monday afternoon. Priority will be given to a balanced instrumentation and seniority of students.

Schedule

Students who make the roster will be excused from periods 4-7, and return to AVHS around 3pm. Please note that students will need to find their own ride home as the school bus routes will have already left the school. 

Lunch

Students will miss school lunch but given time at Target Center to eat some concessions during the game. Target Center is cashless, so students will need to bring a way to pay by credit card, Apple Pay, or Google Play. ISD 196 will give every band student attending a $15 cash per diem to reimburse the cost of buying lunch at Target Center.

Curricular Bands Concert - Tuesday, 3/11

All AVHS curricular bands (Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble) will perform in concert on Tuesday, 3/11 beginning at 7:00PM in the AVHS theatre. Students will need to arrive by 6:30PM and dress in black concert attire. Students are expected to remain for the entire concert.

South Suburban Band Festival - Wind Ensemble, 3/13

On Thursday, 3/13, the Wind Ensemble will be traveling to Shakopee High School to participate in the SSC Large Group Festival. All the top ensembles from schools in the SSC participate in this annual event, during which we will receive a clinic from Dr. Henry Dorn from St. Olaf College. Students will be dismissed from 2nd period at 9am for the remainder of the day. Wind Ensemble students will wear nice clothes instead of their concert black.

Extra-Credit Athletic Band - Boys Basketball Section Finals - Thursday, 3/13 @AVHS

Any Band student can sign-up for the Athletic Band performance on Thursday, 3/13 for lettering credit and 5 extra credit points towards their 3rd trimester grade. This is a home game! Use this link to sign-up by Wednesday, 3/12 at 2:30pm.

Etude Assessments - Due Monday, 3/3 for all band students grade 9-11

Every year, all underclassmen perform etudes as an assessment of player skills and growth. Recordings of the etudes are due on Monday, 3/3 by 11:59pm. Points toward the second trimester grade are given to those who turn the assessment in on time. The quality of the performance helps in determining band placement for next school year. Students who completed the MMEA All-State auditions will submit those recordings in place of the AVHS etudes.

4th Grade Demo Concert - Wind Ensemble, 3/6

Wind Ensemble members will be performing for the west cluster 4th grade elementary students in an instrument demonstration concert. Parents are welcome to attend this fun concert. Wind Ensemble students will wear nice clothes instead of their concert black.

Students should take a "selfie" of themselves with the AVHS theatre stage in the background at the end of the performance they attend and upload this picture to the "Broadway Attendance Extra Credit" assignment in Schoology. With the cast and crew numbering over 130 this year, you are likely to know someone in the show!

Visit by composer Erika Svanoe - Tuesday, 2/11

We are hosting composer and professor, Dr. Erika Svanoe at AVHS this upcoming Tuesday. All 3 curricular bands have been working on one of Dr. Svanoe’s pieces for our March concert and she will rehearse each band during her visit. Thank you to the band boosters for supporting this experience for all of our students!

Scale Assessment

All band students in grades 9-11 will perform a scale assessment during their 1st lesson of Trimester 3. Students have been practicing these scales in class and should be practicing them at home. In addition to the lesson 1 grade, the scale assessment is used as a portion of the band placement process for the 2025-2026 school year.

MMEA All-State Band & Jazz Ensemble Auditions

Being selected as an All-State student is one of the highest honors and accolades music students can achieve. Any current 10th-11th grade band student can audition for an All-State ensemble. Audition materials are posted on Schoology. Video recorded auditions are due on Sunday, 2/23. If chosen, students will participate in a camp in August and a performance the following February. If any hockey or basketball teams make it to section finals or beyond we will be offering opportunities for the band to travel, but our final performance at a regular season game is on Tuesday, 2/4 (students report at 6:15pm).

All of our students are assigned 2 events. If you're not able to come to your assigned performance dates, follow the Athletic Band Attendance Policy on how to find a substitute.

Band concerts are our “finals”. Attendance is mandatory unless it is an emergency situation. Students will need to arrive by 6:15pm to allow time for warm-ups and yearbook pictures. The concert starts at 7pm. Please make sure your student is dressed appropriately for the concert: 

Concert Band (9th Grade) – wear the band t-shirt provided by the band boosters (these will be given to students the week before the concert) along with black pants, black socks, and black dress shoes.

Symphonic Band & Wind Ensemble (10th-12th grade) – concert formalwear. Long black dress provided by the band boosters along with black dress shoes OR Black tux jacket, black dress pants, black socks, black dress shoes, white dress shirt, black bowtie or long black tie.

Flute and Clarinet Ensembles to perform at AVHS Solo & Ensemble Festival - Saturday, 1/25/25

Once a week for the next 2 months, all flute players will be rehearsing a new set of music with flute specialist, Carol Gilkey, during their band rehearsal period. This incredible enrichment opportunity finishes with a performance as part of the AVHS Solo & Ensemble Festival on the morning of Saturday, 1/25. Like all events during the festival, the flute and clarinet ensemble performances will be open to the public and will take  approximately 10-15 minutes. When students attend this performance, they will receive 10 extra credit points towards their Trimester 2 grade and 10 points towards a 2024-25 band letter.

The exact times of the performances will be determined after considering schedule conflicts of the ensemble members. If a member of the ensembles has a conflict during the morning of Saturday, 1/25, email Ms. Mason, including a parent/guardian, describing the nature and time of your conflict. If possible, we will schedule around your conflict. Please complete this communication before winter break.

Give to the Max - Support the AVHS Band Boosters!

We are excited to kick off our big fundraising month of giving with Give MN. Give MN aims to increase generosity in MN by connecting donors to nonprofits like us – the AVHS Band Boosters. 

MN Give to the Max Day is on Thursday, November 21, however, early giving is now open! Did you know 100% of these donations go directly to the AVHS Band program? 

Our goal is to raise $20,000! We know we can do it with your support & that of our community!

Why such a big goal? Through this donation, we hope to: 

• Maximize musical opportunities for our students by funding guest conductors & master classes, providing accompanists for students participating in the solo ensemble festival, and more).

• Expand our scholarship opportunities by continuing to fund registration fees for students who are accepted into All-State ensembles, and increase scholarships we can provide students with financial need. 

• Support our large freshman class by providing T-shirts and other opportunities. 

• Reduce the number of smaller fundraisers needed throughout the year.

Our apparel site is open just in time for Holiday orders.   Windbreakers have been added to the store! Fall Musical "Sister Act" - Final weekend of performances

Band students have the opportunity to earn extra credit by attending a performance of the fall musical. Students will take a "selfie" of themselves with the AVHS theatre stage in the background at the end of the performance they attend and upload this picture to the "Fall Musical Attendance Extra Credit" assignment in Schoology. Student tickets are $5 and can be purchased here.

Clarinet Ensemble - Last Chance to sign-up!

Clarinet Ensemble rehearsals will begin on Thursday, 11/14 from 2:40-3:40pm in the ensemble room in the band area. Clarinet Ensemble will meet every Thursday school day until the scheduled performance at the AVHS Solo and Ensemble Festival on Saturday, 1/25. The entire list of rehearsals can be found on our website. Our clarinet expert, Dr. Melissa Morales will be leading this ensemble.

Clarinet Ensemble is a fantastic way to build your clarinet skills and understanding of the clarinet section. There is no audition necessary and thanks to the support of our Band Boosters, no fee to participate. Any clarinet student grade 9-12 can be a part of Clarinet Ensemble! 

Being a part of Clarinet Ensemble will earn you 10 extra credit points towards your band grade for both trimester 1 and 2. Please sign-up using this Google form by Thursday, 11/7. This will allow time to prepare music for the first rehearsal.

Extra Credit Athletic Band - Volleyball State Tournament

There will be an extra credit Athletic Band performance at the first round of the State Volleyball Tournament the afternoon of Wednesday, 11/6. This game will involve those who sign-up, missing part of the school day. Students who play in the Athletic Band get free transportation and tickets to the game. We will have more details early next week.

Athletic Band event added – Tuesday 10/22 @ 5:15pm - Symphonic Band & Wind Ensemble (required), Concert Band (extra credit - sign-up here)

Seeding for football playoffs were announced at the end of this past week by the MSHSL. AVHS is hosting a home game next Tuesday, 10/22. Just like the rest of our home games, the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble members will combine to perform during the 1st half of the game. The game itself starts earlier than normal, 6pm, so we will ask students to meet in the band room by 5:15pm. Concert Band members can sign-up here for extra credit and points towards their band letter on the Athletic Band bulletin board in the band hallway.

Schedule Conflicts – please make every effort to attend the performance (it will be fun!), but we do anticipate that many Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble students will have existing commitments for this evening. In these situations, a parent or guardian should send Mr. Scalise an email (david.scalise@district196.org) and a make-up assignment will be issued to the student.

Droolin’ Moose Chocolate Fundraiser - Due Monday, 10/21

Any Concert Band student can join the upperclassmen at the football Athletic Band performance on Friday, 10/11 for lettering credit and 10 extra credit points towards their 1st trimester grade. Grade 9 students must sign-up using this google form by Thursday, 10/9. Students will meet in the AVHS Theatre at by 6:15pm and be dismissed at the end of halftime (~8:30pm). The dress theme is "blackout".

Droolin' Moose Chocolate Fundraiser - Orders due Monday, 10/21

The AVHS band boosters are offering students the opportunity to sell Droolin' Moose chocolates to raise money towards individual student band trip accounts.  Students will bank $2 per container sold to be applied toward future band trips. Order forms have been distributed to students this week. Completed forms and money must be turned in to the band directors by Monday, October 21. Chocolates will arrive in early November. Possible playoff football game Athletic Band performances - 10/22 & 10/26

Grades 10-12 perform at all home football games, including home playoff games. We will not know the playoff schedule until after the conclusion of the regular season. It is possible the football team would have a playoff game on Tuesday, 10/22 @6:15pm and 10/26 @11:15pm. Please include these dates on your calendar of commitments. Once a team loses in playoffs, remaining athletic band events for that sport do not happen.

Are you hearing practicing at home?

Practicing and preparing for band lessons is students' homework for band. Learning an instrument takes regular individual practicing at home. A good rule to follow: practice at home 5 days a week for 15 minutes each day. Students should practice band lesson material first and then music being performed in class.

Tonight! AVHS Band Spirit Night & First Football Athletic Band Performance

Come celebrate the beginning of the year with us! The band will do an extra pre-game standing performance on the lawn in front of the AVHS stadium entrance around 6:20pm. The band boosters will also be providing root beer floats to families before the game in the same area and selling 50/50 raffle tickets to benefit the band!

Lessons begin next week - Review the lesson policy - find your lesson book!

Every band student will receive 4 individual lessons with Ms. Mason (all woodwinds) or Mr. Scalise (brass & percussion). We spent time in class reviewing the lesson policy and lesson schedules (Mason & Scalise). Please take a moment to review this information with your student. One of the most frequently asked questions is about make-up lessons, which are only available in these 2 circumstances:

1. 1. Classroom teacher does not let the student miss class to attend the scheduled lesson.

Before your lesson time, reply to the email containing your lesson pass. CC your classroom teacher and explain to your lesson teacher why you can’t attend your scheduled lesson (ie. test, field trip).

All information regarding jazz ensemble auditions is posted on Schoology. You can review the general audition info here. Audition videos need to be completed and uploaded to Schoology by Monday, September 25th.  Rehearsals are afterschool starting in November.

We need volunteers, sign up here! - Formal Wear Fittings - Monday, 9/23

We need to fit our growing Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble students in tux jackets and dresses that are worn for our concerts. Please consider volunteering to help us. Here are the details:

Monday, 9/23 – 9:40-11:30am – AVHS Theatre

2-3 female volunteers for dress pinning

2-3 volunteers for jacket fittings

Hearing Protection - Orders due Thursday, 9/12

Ear protection for musicians available for purchase through the AVHS Band Boosters.  Please see the information sheet and order form.  Please return completed order form and payment by Thursday, September 12, 2024.  If you have any questions, please reach out to Kelly McElhinny at kmcelhinny@charter.net.  Once orders are received they will be distributed to students during band.

Football Athletic Band Performances (grades 10-12 only) - first game on 9/13

Football Game - Friday, 9/13 @6:00pm - the band will do an extra pre-game standing performance on the lawn in front of the AVHS stadium entrance around 6:20pm. The boosters will also be providing root beer floats to families before the game in the same area. Come celebrate the first game with us!

All Band Concerts - Mark your calendars

We have three concerts throughout the year that ALL students must attend outside of the school day:

Monday, 12/9 @7pm - students arrive at 6:15pm

Tuesday, 3/11 @7pm - students arrive at 6:30pm

Thursday, 5/22 @7pm - students arrive at 6:30pm

Percussion Ensemble - all percussion students grade 9-12 - Concert on Wednesday, 4/30

New this year, our percussion ensemble will be rehearsing during the day rather than after school. If you are a percussionist, you are in percussion ensemble! All percussionists will rehearse with their ensemble on most Thursdays. The three ensembles will perform at least one combined piece at their concert on 4/30, which will be rehearsed during a few "Eagle Intervention & Enrichment" times on Wednesdays. An exact calendar can be found on our website. We are excited to have Mr. Jack Johnson join our team as our percussion ensemble director!

We will not be playing on the first day of school due to the abbreviated schedule, but we will dive right in on day 2!
